In the pilot episode, Penny is a member of the friendship group also including Jane, Dave, Max, Alex and Brad. At her birthday Penny claims to be Jewish and is celebrating her twenty sixth, but she is lying to impress her new boyfriend Todd. Later, she confesses that she is Cathloic, and that she is actually thirty.
ABC cancelled Happy Endings in May 2013 because of low ratings. The comedy series was previously pulling in over three million viewers and was at a 1.2 in demographics for the 18-49 age range before viewership took a dive.
The aftermath of the game prompts Penny to make an unexpected decision - she breaks off her engagement with Pete after realizing she doesn't have what Jane and Brad have and can't see herself with him decades from now.
John and Mary meet, fall in love, and marry. They have successful careers, buy a house that appreciates in value, and pay “live-in help” to raise two happy, successful children. The happy couple enjoy sex, have friends, travel, retire, and take up hobbies that they enjoy till their deaths.

Later on, it's revealed that Penny's birthday is December 2nd, 1985, making her 21 years old and the youngest of the cast. Penny is 33 years old by the time the series ends, and she's established a marriage of equals with Leonard after years of a will-they-won't-they romance.
