Best Overall

Reformation

These Are the Best Linen Clothing Brands to Shop Before Your Next Trip (2)

Why We Love It

  • Reformation is an it-girl favorite with multiple outfit options for summer parties and versatile looks that will translate from day to night. Plus, it has an extended size range available.

What to Consider

  • Regular sizes tend to run small, and the hemlines and thigh splits can be on the shorter side.

Reformation’s linen range is extensive, with coordinating sets, dresses, pants, shorts, blazers, and tops in various silhouettes and prints. It even offers linen shoes for full head-to-toe coordination. The brand has long been a go-to for supermodels off duty and celebrities (featured twice in J.Lo’s honeymoon wardrobe), and although it’s often teamed with designer handbags and accessories, everything retails for under $300. Another plus? The website is user-friendly with various filters to narrow down your requirements (there’s even one to select deadstock fabric to keep leftovers out of landfills), and each piece is presented with adaptable styling ideas. With a constant flow of new releases, there is something for everyone, but our favorites are the Bridgton Linen Dress, the Tagliatelle Linen Dress, and the Teya Linen Two Piece.

Why We Love It

  • Zimmermann’s dresses are colorful masterpieces that are perfect for special occasions.

What to Consider

  • As you would expect with any designer brand, it is an investment.

The Australian brand is renowned for its signature romantic dresses, composed of whimsical florals and elegant design details that enhance the female form. A destination for basics it is not – each style is as unique and vibrant as the locations where they inevitably show up, be it a yacht on the Mediterranean, a beach club in Capri, or a terrace in Paris. Our favorites are the Clover Halter Shirt Dress, the Devi Spliced Midi Dress, and the Tama Corset Midi Dress.

Price range: $190 to $2,950

Best Organic

Eileen Fisher Doubleface Wool Shawl Collar Coat

These Are the Best Linen Clothing Brands to Shop Before Your Next Trip (4)

Why We Love It

  • Eileen Fisher’s collections embody classic coastal elegance, and it’s a brand that has championed sustainable fashion since the ‘80s, long before the industry made it a buzzword.

What to Consider

  • It runs very large, and you may need to order two sizes down in certain styles.

Mature women favor Eileen Fisher for minimalist staples that provide comfort and coverage – nothing is too tight, too sheer, or too trend-focused; it’s all about timeless garments you’ll enjoy putting on in the morning. There are breezy button downs, blouses, wide-leg pants, and versatile dresses. But beyond the brand’s aesthetic drawcards, it’s a leader in sustainability, with production processes that actually make a difference. “Organic linen cultivation is very important to us because organic farming practices support healthy communities, cleaner water, and healthier soil,” says Inka Apter, Designer for Fabric R&D at Eileen Fisher. “These benefits extend to the agricultural crops grown in rotation with linen,” she adds.

Everlane

These Are the Best Linen Clothing Brands to Shop Before Your Next Trip (5)

Why We Love It

  • Everlane is a one-stop shop for ethically made men’s and women’s basics that are designed to last.

What to Consider

  • Some of the straps on the tops can be too long for those with shorter torsos and may need to be tailored.

Everlane prides itself on “radical transparency,” partnering with ethical factories and producing clothing that is made to outlive fleeting trends. It’s an excellent destination for casual men’s and women’s fundamentals in any season, with affordable cashmere in the winter, linen in the summer, and organic cotton year-round. Head to the website’s dedicated linen shop, and you’ll find versatile items that are sure to be on high rotation in the months ahead, like the linen easy pant, the standard fit shirt, the drape short, and the scoop-neck tank. Each style is available in a range of neutral colors and pastel tones that look just as good as a coordinating set as they do when paired with denim.

Price range: $50 to 178

Best for Tops

AYR

These Are the Best Linen Clothing Brands to Shop Before Your Next Trip (6)

Why We Love It

  • AYR’s “The Deep End” shirts are hugely popular for good reason – they’re not too long, not too billowy, and are comfortable to wear on long, hot days.

What to Consider

  • They feature one large pocket square on the chest, which may not be to everyone’s tastes.

The Deep End is to AYR what the mesh polo is to Ralph Lauren: a style so wildly popular that it remains integral to the brand. We can’t get enough of the perfectly oversized fit that is comfortable and well-tailored. The Irish linen version is available in three different neutral colors, and there are also striped variations in cotton nylon blends. And if you’re wondering how to wear this classic shirt outside the office, AYR’s VP of Women’s Design, Brigette Deshais has some styling advice. “You can wear our Deep End shirt open over a bathing suit during the day, slipping on the Metropolitan trouser for the walk to the beach, and later, pair it with the High Nineties tank in black, a low, strappy heel, and a belt — et voila! — you’re ready for aperitifs.”

Price range: $18 to $325

Best Durable

Cuyana

These Are the Best Linen Clothing Brands to Shop Before Your Next Trip (7)

Why We Love It

  • Cuyana is a brand that prioritizes quality over quantity, with sustainable linen fabrics that are blended with lyocell, which is an excellent fabric for travel, as it has wrinkle-resistant properties.

What to Consider

  • Its linen range is lovely but limited with only six styles, each offered in two different colors: navy or an earthy terracotta shade.

Cuyana is a brand that makes everything you need, and nothing that you don’t. Consider it a go-to for building a capsule wardrobe with durable clothing essentials that are designed to last, like this flared linen skirt, gathered neck dress, or this elegant relaxed blazer, with a waist-defining tie and an elongated hemline. Since launching in 2011, the DTC brand has become a favorite for leather goods, like its Easy Tote, but it’s also gained recognition for its high-quality apparel made from sturdy fabrics that have been proven to stand the test of time. We also love that the eco-friendly linen is blended with lyocell to help keep the inevitable wrinkles at bay when traveling.

Sleeper

These Are the Best Linen Clothing Brands to Shop Before Your Next Trip (9)

Why We Love It

  • Launched by two former fashion editors, this Ukrainian brand makes the most beautiful loungewear and coordinating sets. And it’s safe to say that local businesses could do with our support.

What to Consider

  • Due to the situation in Kyiv, where the atelier is based, shipping could be delayed.

If you’re seeking elevated loungewear with playful details, look no further than Sleeper. The brand is known for its “party pajamas” with feather trims, but it has more wearable options for beyond the bedroom, too, like its Rumba Linen Lounge Suit with ruffled hems and the Atlanta lounge suit with billowing sleeves and a shirred bodice. It also has elegant linen dresses, and coordinating sets like this luxurious satin-trimmed linen vest and matching midi skirt.

Price range: $42 to $590

Tips for Buying Linen Clothing

Consider the type of linen

“High-quality linen fiber mostly comes from Western Europe – Normandy in France, Belgium, and The Netherlands,” explains Inka Apter, Designer for Fabric R&D at Eileen Fisher. “Linen is such a tactile material, and everyone responds differently – some people prefer a smooth and lustrous surface with more polish and some prefer a more rustic and textured appeal. That is the beauty of linen – it’s extremely versatile.” Apter adds that although European countries lead the way in textile production on a smaller scale, Asian countries are also key players. “Japanese mills are very creative when it comes to linen materials but Chinese mills have caught on, and in terms of quality, are quite good as well. I would say that the origin is less important than the overall appearance and the aesthetics of the fabric,” she adds.

Look at care instructions

As with any type of fabric, it’s important to follow the care instructions for each individual garment, which, for linens, typically advise to keep colors separate and use a gentle wash cycle. According to Melissa Bradley, founder of luxury travel company, Indagare, “the key is buying high-quality soft linen that gently rumples, rather than stiffer linen that can crease badly.

Think about when you plan to wear it

It all depends on the dress code: is it something for the coffee run during the peak of summer? A swimwear cover-up? Or perhaps a sophisticated dress for an al fresco dinner in St. Tropez? If it’s the latter, explore some of the vibrant designer options on the market. “Some of my favorite summer styles include the cutout linen mini dress from St. Agni for its unique back cutout shape, and its versatility,” advises Maggie Stepf, a Senior Private Client Advisor for Moda Operandi. “It can also be worn with pants for a clean, edgy, effortless look,” she says, adding that the Halcyon linen slip dress from Zimmermann, is the perfect dress for summer, with its beautiful floral place print and easy silhouette.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is linen an eco-friendly fabric?

“Linen is very eco-friendly and is grown without the need for fertilizers or pesticides,” explains Moda Operandi’s Maggie Stepf. “It is a renewable resource, and it can be produced without damaging the environment. It uses less water than cotton and is biodegradable. Linen is [also] a very strong fabric (it has even been used as armor), is biodegradable, and uses less water than cotton. While we always think of clothing when it comes to linen, it is also prevalent in bedding and other home textiles. When cared for, the material can last for 20 years!” Eileen Fisher’s Inka Apter advises that a certification consumers should look for when choosing linen products is GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard.

  • When should you wear linen clothing?

“Although you are able to wear linen year-round, especially a linen blend, it is particularly suitable for the summer months and in warmer climates,” advises Moda Operandi’s Maggie Stepf. “It is sourced from the flax plant and is a natural fiber, known for its absorbency, and ability to wick moisture, keeping the wearer cool.” Net-a-Porter’s Market Director, Libby Page says that “between 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit is the perfect weather to wear linen because of how lightweight and breathable it is.”

  • How do you care for linen clothing?

“If washing at home, always use a gentle cycle, keep colors separate, and never twist or wring as that will damage the fibers,” advises Maggie Stepf. “Also, it is best to iron while the garment is still a little wet and hang to dry but be sure to follow the care instructions on each individual garment.” Indagare’s Melissa Bradley says she prefers “steaming linen rather than using an iron and hand washing rather than dry cleaning.” And a useful tip that Net-a-Porter’s Libby Page shared is to keep it away from sunscreen. “It'll leave it stained and not looking fresh,” she explains.
