Should I contact the IRS for an inprogress tax return review?

Postby midwest_bound »
I filed my taxes in February and have been waiting for a fairly large refund since then. I have periodically checked the Where's My Refund tool provided by the IRS and as of today I am seeing a page saying:
We have received your tax return and it is being reviewed.
Please read the following information related to your tax situation:
Tax Topic 151, Your Appeal Rights
If you have questions or need additional information, please have the following on hand when you call:
A copy of this page.
A copy of your tax return.
The Social Security Number, Filing Status, and refund amount claimed on your return.
Any notice that you have received concerning your refund. Please mention reference number 1242 to the IRS Customer Service Representative.
Should I proactively contact the IRS? Or should I wait for them to contact me first? I want to do whatever will expedite this process. Also, is there any reason I should be worried at this point?

Wait. Don't worry. Remember they are way understaffed, so things take months.

If I understand your previous post correctly, it seems that you expected the IRS to ask for supporting documentation before issuing a refund. I would create an online account though so that you have a way to check to see if the IRS sends you correspondence.

Agree that you should create an account and view your transcript. https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
You can see if the return was entered. You can see if there are any hold codes or audit codes. For example, a code 570 is a refund hold. A code 420 is an examination request.
You may not be able to speed up the process even by getting taxpayer advocate involved. Sometimes these IRS processes just need time, especially if it involves manual review (human intervention).
Sometimes these resolve without any information from you and sometimes they will write correspondence asking for supporting documentation.

Thanks! I was trying to login and something weird has happened - it looks like the IRS is only allowing people to login with ID.me now and this login method is taking me to an older account. I know for a fact I logged in with email a month or so ago and saw that my address had been updated after I submitted a form. Now when I'm logging in with ID.me it's showing my old address again. I hope any contact attempts are going to my new address.

Yes the old log in no longer works. The new ID.me is now required for all.
I hope any contact attempts are going to my new address.
I hope so too. The only way to know is to call. Ask the CSR to verify that your address is current.

The last time I tried calling the IRS, I would have to wait on hold for an hour. Once I get a person, they would tell me that this has to be handled by a different department and then the person will say that they need to send this to the back for review and then it sat for 2 months.
Later, when I tried to call to get status, the automated system would malfunction and start over, making it difficult to reach the right department unless you get it on the first try. Things got worse, when I call, I was told that the system was being upgraded for the new tax year, so I have to call back after the upgrade.
I end up writing a letter. You should probalby do that or talk to a real representative at a local tax office. Before you do that, I would setup an online account so you can view the transcript to see if it will resolve your issue. In my case, it did not.
