The best-selling vehicle on the planet soldiers into another year, and although its current generation is older than its competitors, the 2020 Ford F-150 remains fully competitive and a must drive. Its compelling lineup of advanced engines is a big part of its appeal, but this aluminum bodied truck is plenty sophisticated in other ways, from its ample technology offerings to its diverse trim levels that range from basic work truck to several high-end luxury choices. We've had a chance to try a multitude of them, and although we generally prefer the Ram 1500, the 2020 F-150 is so well-rounded that choosing one instead wouldn't be a bad idea at all.

Changes are light for 2020. Ford's Co-Pilot360 accident avoidance tech now comes standard starting with the Lariat trim, while the Power Stroke diesel engine can now be had on the lower XLT trim. There are also some new colors and a Black Appearance package for the XLT and Lariat.

Typical for a full-size truck, there are regular, extended (SuperCab) and crew (SuperCrew) cabs available. A full 8-foot bed is available on both the Regular Cab and SuperCab, but a 6.5-foot bed is the largest you can option on the SuperCrew. Then there are multiple trim levels. The XL, XLT and Lariat serve as the most popular choices among buyers, while the King Ranch, Platinum and Limited provide differing style and equipment choices for those seeking a luxury truck. There's also the high-performance F-150 Raptor.

Engine options differ by trim level. The base engine is a 3.3-liter V6 that makes 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. Upgrades include a 2.7-liter turbo V6 (325 hp, 400 lb-ft), a 5.0-liter V8 (395 hp, 400 lb-ft) and a 3.5-liter turbo V6 (375 hp, 470 lb-ft). If you buy the Raptor or Limited, you get the high-output 3.5-liter V6 and its whopping 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. There's also the Power Stroke diesel V6 (250 hp, 440 lb-ft).
